Gertrude Three Finger, Cheyenne by William E. Irwin (1871-1935). Irwin worked in Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona in the 1890s and early 1900s, and specialized in photographing Native Americans. This photograph is an albumen print mounted on a cabinet card, archived in the Western History Collections of the University of Oklahoma Libraries, and featured in A Stylistic Analysis of American Indian Portrait Photography in Oklahoma, 1869-1904 (2001) by Amy Nelson. The woman’s dress is decorated with elk teeth.
This is a later photo, published in True Stories of Our Pioneers (1904) by Mason, Ridpath and White.
How do I get more information about this woman and her tribe? Is there any way to get a copy of the print? Are there living relatives?
Thank you and blessings,
Jodi Riggs
You can buy a print here: https://www.fineartnewmexico.com/pd-pricing/art_print_products/gertrude-three-fingers-cheyenne?product_gallery=1242&related_products=true&source_page_id=19427 There is a later photo of her, which I have added to the post, in “True Stories of Our Pioneers” (1904) by Mason, Ridpath and White, but I couldn’t find a story to go with it.
I have wondered myself as my closest friends and family agree her and I could be doppelgängers. We are identical to one another. Also to add I’m a registered tribal member in Oregon, from different times in history and different states but both have affiliations to one tribe.
Hi Marissa
My daughter Samantha looks identical to Gertrude three fingers photo with elk teeth. I can’t stop looking at the photo as it’s like looking at my daughter! Bizarre! We live in New Zealand. Sammy is 23 years old. Very interesting and intriguing!
Would love to hear from you.
Regards Lisa molloy ( Samantha’s mum) NZ
What a lovely young lady. R.I.P.
I have a glass negative of this photo of Gertrude 3 finger with the elk tooth dress sitting in the chair and a glass negative with 2 papooses one with a baby in it and one with a rose. I also have a negative (not glass) with Geronimo.
( William E Erwin) How much are they worth???
Would love to see the other photo you have. How did you come by the glass negatives? IMO, they are invaluable, especially to relatives. Thank you ☀️
My Step Dad got them from his mother. They were found years ago in Old Tucson
