Harriet Hoctor

Harriet Hoctor

Trained as a ballerina, Harriet Hoctor (1905-1977) danced in vaudeville, Florence Ziegfeld productions, a ballet staging of George Gershwin’s An American in Paris, and then in films, including Shall We Dance (1937) with Fred Astaire. And she taught dance for almost 30 years in Boston. One account whimsically notes, “Hoctor enjoyed ping pong as a hobby.” I enjoy this backstage photograph, and wonder what the trophy was for.
