In a Canoe

A pioneering surfer, Ron Drummond (1907-1996) was born in Los Angeles, raised in Hollywood, and went with his family each summer to Hermosa Beach, where he learned to body-surf and ride waves (as high as 15 feet) in a canoe. In 1931, Drummond self-published 500 copies of The Art of Wave Riding, regarded by some as the first book on surfing. Wave Riding is prized among collectors of surfing “ephemera,” and copies of the 26-page book have sold for up to $1,200. Drummond continued to swim and body-surf into his mid-80s.
