Air Mail, 1933

Air Mail Stamp

In July of 1933, the Lituanica was flown across the Atlantic Ocean by Lithuanian-American pilots Steponas “Stephen” Darius and Stasys “Stanley” Girėnas. After taking off from Floyd Bennett Field, N.Y., bound for Kaunas, Lithuania, Darius and Girėnas successfully crossed the Atlantic, only to crash and perish in a forest near the village of Kuhdamm, Germany (now Pszczelnik, Poland). Lituanica carried the first transatlantic air mail consignment in history, which was recovered and delivered.
