I thought I discovered a link between cigars and leprosy when I chanced upon this trading card in the New York Public Library’s digital collections.
It bore an uncanny resemblance to the famed Dutch Masters cigar logo:
However, while the card bears the image of “The Regents of the Leprosy Hospital” by a student of Rembrandt, the painting used by Dutch Masters is by Rembrandt himself: “The Syndics of the Drapers’ Guild” a.k.a. “The Sampling Officials” (“De Staalmeesters”).
Somehow, linking cigars and drapes is not as exciting.
