Burning Ghats

Ghats are steps that lead to a river; burning ghats are those steps where bodies are cremated before the ashes are taken to the river. The postcard above shows the steps at the city of Benares (also known as Varanasi) leading down to the sacred Ganges River.

In 1897, Samuel Clemens, writing as Mark Twain, said of the city, “Benares is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend, and looks twice as old as all of them put together.”
