The name Gabriel means “man of God,” or “God has shown himself mighty.” In the Christian Bible (Luke 1:26), Gabriel appears to Mary to announce the birth of Jesus and notes, “For with God, nothing shall be impossible.” In Islam, Gabriel is the angel who reveals the Koran to Muhammad.
Nineteenth century sources note that Gabriel is “guardian of the celestial treasury, the bearer of important messages, the angel of the annunciation, the preceptor of the patriarch Joseph.”
